My Little Soldier

By: James Hudspeth

I’ve been gone for thirteen months. It seems like forever since I left my family.

Kissing family members good bye, wiping tears, and stifling sobs I boarded the plane.

I took one last look at everyone. My eyes stopped on my little solider.

My little solider wasn’t crying anymore.

The little soldier was standing fast and on guard.

The little soldier would be on alert until I came home…

As I rode in the darkened taxi home I think of birthdays missed, and the time I’ll never get back.

Now I walk down the quiet hall of my home I kiss the one I love and missed.

We walk hand in hand to the little soldier’s room. I release my love’s hand, and open the door.

It is time to relieve to the little soldier.

I see my little soldier has changed so much.

I kneel by the bed and reach out with shaking hand.

For I am afraid this might just be a dream.

I gently place my hand on my little girls arm.

Little eyes flutter open. First a smile, and then arms squeeze my neck.

“Mom your home.”
