The Devil's Poison
By: Shalika Sivathasan
A life free from duty, from honour, from pride,
would be like the blushing sun ducking to hide.
For the world would then plunge into frightful despair,
and the darkness would lure all into Satan's lair.
And there in the darkness temptation does wait,
for the purest of heart to one day meet their fate.
And the devil does tease with his poisons and lust,
and he tells you sweet lies so to then gain your trust.
But as soon as you fall he does scamper away,
leaving you to see truth in the light of the day.
And you're left to the judgement of all those around,
he'll not save you when you fall weeping to the ground.
Privy am I to this torturous tale,
one which surrounds a life destined to fail.
Even now whilst I sit, thunder crashing above,
I can feel 'gainst my skin the devil's poisoned love.
For I fell to his feet when I tasted his drink,
and I kissed his ringed hand without stopping to think.
Then the devil demanded the ultimate cost,
one taste of his drink... my innocence lost.
