New measures to improve safety on Davis Drive west of Newmarket were given the green light by York Region councillors last week.
Among the plans, the region is recommending new traffic signals at Davis and Keele Street and a second set just west of there, at the entrance of Cardinal Golf Club.
The highway, where speeding is frequent, has had it share of serious crashes over the years.
One man was killed and another critically injured in October during a multi-vehicle crash between Dufferin and Keele streets.
Two months later, four people were taken to hospital with critical injuries after a head-on crash west of Hwy. 400.
Installation of the new signals is contingent on funding from King Township and the golf club, respectively.
Other measures approved last week include:
• “Intersection ahead” signs at the north and south approaches of Jane, Keele and Dufferin streets;
• Flashing amber beacons for the sign at Dufferin;
• Centreline rumble strips from Glenview Heights Lane to 580 metres east of the south leg of Dufferin;
• Reducing the speed limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h between Bathurst and Eagle streets; and
• New pavement markings to assist in reducing speeds
Other safety features were approved in December including beefing up York Regional Police patrols and renaming the route from Highway 9 to Davis Drive West.
