Residents in York Region’s northern six municipalities can walk with their heads held high because their towns have won the P.J. Marshall Merit Award.
The Association of Municipalities of Ontario awarded Aurora, East Gwillimbury, King, Georgina, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville the prize for their innovation and co-operation in the green bin project.
By putting aside the going alone mentality, the municipalities will save more than $11 million over the next 10 years by combining campaign efforts on the blue box, yard waste, household hazardous waste diversion and organic waste programs.
Together, the six towns were able to double the diversion rate and exceed their original goal of 65 per cent, Aurora Mayor Phyills Morris said.
The award celebrates innovative partnerships that maximize community resources, said Peter Hume, AMO president.
