Darrin Moss finished two years of treatment for leukemia, then went out and golfed to raise money to fight the disease.

Mr. Moss and Ryan Daly, both 28-year-old Unionville High School graduates, were the inspirations for the second annual Get Rec’d golf tournament.

The event, held at the Rolling Hills course in Whitchurch-Stouffville, raised more than $12,500 for leukemia research at Princess Margaret Hospital and other charities.

Mr. Moss and Mr. Daly played hockey and golf together before being diagnosed just six months apart. Mr. Daly has been waiting more than a year for a bone marrow transplant.

“Our goal is to get every eligible Canadian to register to become a bone marrow and/or blood donOr,” tournament chairperson Laura Daly said.

You no longer have to have surgery to donate bone marrow, she said. It is now a simple blood donation, followed by separating stem cells for bone marrow use.

For more information on donating, check out www.blood.ca or call 1-888-2 DONATE.

Planning for next year’s tournament is under way.
