The condition of a Sutton man rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition following a crash in Markham Monday night has been upgraded, Ontario Provincial Police said.
At about 7 p.m., an eastbound Toyota Yaris halted at the intersection of Hwy. 48 and 19th Avenue. At the same time, a Pontiac G5 was northbound on Hwy. 48 and a pickup truck with a trailer hauling furniture was headed south, OPP Const. Dave Woodford said.
After the Yaris entered the intersection, the G5’s driver slammed on the car’s brakes, sending it into the southbound lanes of Hwy. 48, where it crashed into the pickup’s trailer, Const. Woodford said.
The G5’s driver, a 35-year-old Sutton man, was trapped inside the wreckage and freed by Markham firefighters before being airlifted to Sunnybrook hospital, originally in life-threatening condition. The Sutton man’s condition was upgraded at 10 a.m. Tuesday. He suffered serious injuries in the crash, Const. Woodford said.
No one else was hurt in the collision. The highway was re-opened to traffic at about midnight.
The male driver of the Yaris is charged with failure to yield to traffic on a through highway, according to Const. Woodford.
No other information about him was available.
