The Rotary Club of Newmarket will celebrate literacy with the rest of the world tomorrow as part of International Literacy Day.

The club hopes to stress the importance of literacy as a way to tackle poverty. In this area, the group donated children’s books to the Keswick Public Library and others.

Internationally, the club, along with others in the GTA, has sent volunteers to Tanzania to build and refurbish schools and donate books, school supplies and teaching resources.

As part of International Literacy Day the local Rotary Club wants to stress the importance of literacy and encourage parents here at home to read to their children from birth, have your children read to you, foster a love of books in your children and teach them to make use of the local libraries as often as they can.

For more information on the club, write to Rotary Club of Newmarket, P.O. Box 95509, 350 Davis Dr., Newmarket, ON, L3Y 8J8 or visit newmarketrotary.org
