Do you want to be updated on the status of Markham Centre?

The town is holding an open house on Nov. 24 to keep residents informed on the project’s vision and future.

Accepted by council in 1994, the Markham Centre plan’s vision was a vibrant, mixed-use and walkable town centre to be completed by a mix of business and residential development.

The open house will inform residents about the overall vision and plans for Markham Centre, current and proposed developments and challenges it will face in the future.

Residents will also find out how the town will meet these challenges without compromising the Markham Centre vision and respecting the interests of surrounding communities.

One challenge is Markham Centre’s designation as an urban growth area under the provincial government’s growth plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

The plan sets out that 40 per cent of new residential development in these areas be located within already built-up places. It also sets out minimum density targets.

Another challenge to meet is the Unionville GO Station’s designation as a mobility hub by Metrolinx.

The town is currently undertaking a height and density review for Markham Centre.

The open house, at the Civic Centre, will including an informal walk-in from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Great Hall, where visitors can view display boards and speak to municipal staff.

Town staff then present in council chambers, as well as answer questions. From 8 to 9 p.m., the walk-in will continue. Visit markhamcentre.com for more info.
