Wong lands in university record book for tennis accomplishment
Steffi Wong put her name into the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo University tennis team’s record books when she and doubles partner Brittany Blalock, became the first individual or tandem in school history to qualify for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division One championships.
Wong, a 20-year-old Markham native, and Blalock, earned the right after being ranked in the top 60 of the ITA rankings.
The tandem is 46th and has a 14-7 record.
The NCAA championship takes place May 21-26 in Oklahoma and is comprised of 32 teams facing off in best-of-three sets.
In addition to earning a berth in the NCAA championships, Wong and Blalock were named to the 2008 Big West All Conference team.
Currently in her senior year at the California school, Wong is majoring in biomedical engineering.
Salvaggio sixth at gymnastics provincials
Alessa Salvaggio capped her competitive season at the Elite Ontario competition in Hamilton and placed sixth in the all-around competition.
The Tristar Gymnastics performer started on a strong note after finishing first on vault and earned the Most Powerful Vault award.
In other individual events, Salvaggio earned a fourth on floor after being the only athlete in her age category to perform a double somersault. In doing so, she earned an award for the Most Variety in Tumbling.
In addition to that effort, she was fifth on beam and 14th on bars.
