Storm hits Pickering event

The Stouffville Storm squirts softball team began its season by capturing the Pickering Early Bird Tournament, climaxed with a 6-5 win over Port Perry in the championship final last week.

Hunter Davidson ignited the offence with two hits while Cameron Fleming and Patrick Fiorino each had one. Ryan Jones fanned 14 batters in seven innings to earn the win.

The Storm received solid defensive play by Fiorino in centre field and a double play by Luke Simcoe.

The Storm began the tournament with a 10-2 drubbing of Pickering. Jones tossed three perfect innings and struck out six batters before giving way to Kevin Matthews, who tossed two innings and gave up just two runs on two hits. Kerrick Brown, Pat Henri and Jones all went two for three at the plate.

Facing Kingston in their second game, the Storm received a solid pitching outing from Brown, who tossed four innings and struck out six batters, in a 7-5 win.

Davidson and Matthews were perfect at the plate while Jones belted two triples and Matt Avoledo also had a triple.

Buoyed by the pitching of Brown and Matthews, the Storm reached the final after routing Port Perry 10-4.

Brown threw three innings and struck out three batters before giving way to Matthews, who threw two innings of one-run ball.

Nathan Cho and Brown paced the offence as each was perfect at the plate.

The Storm will host the Stouffville Invitational Tournament May 31 and June 1. Most games will be played in Memorial Park in one of the largest fastball tournaments in Ontario, with teams in junior mite, mite, squirt and peewee categories.

The Storm squirts’ home games will be played Tuesdays on the main diamond of Memorial Park.

Mennos drop first game, play at home Thursday

The Stouffville Mennos were rained out in their season-opening Oshawa City and District Fastball League game against the host Aurora Shoeless Joe’s Wednesday.

Rescheduled for Wednesday, the Mennos lost 2-0.

Aurora pitcher Todd Martin struck out 10,  walked two and only gave up two hits, to Rich Burkholder and Brett Boyd.

Mennos’ starter Jay Nesbitt worked the first four innings and gave up four hits and one unearned run to take the loss.

The Mennos will make their home debut at Memorial Park Thursday against the Oshawa BB Juniors at 8:30 p.m.

SDSS baseball boys perfect

The Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans boys’ baseball team won its first two York Region games of the 2008 season.

The Spartans began league play last Monday with a 10-7 win over the St. Augustine Catholic High School Titans at Milliken Park in Markham.

The Spartans then played the Markville Secondary School Mavericks Wednesday at Milliken Park and cruised to a 16-0 win.

The Spartans erupted with 11 runs in the first inning before a single out was recorded and never looked back.

Starter Ryan Pontone earned both  wins. Helping to preserve the shutout was some excellent defence provided by outfielder Alex Powell, who ran down a long fly ball and Luke Bartell, who threw out a runner at the plate.

After yesterday’s game against Milliken Mills Secondary School, the Spartans face Bayview Secondary School May 14 at Milliken Mills Park at 3 p.m.

Soccer girls tie one on

The Spartan girls’ soccer team opened its season Monday by battling host Unionville High School Wolves to a 0-0 tie.

While the final score might seem insignificant, to the Spartans it represented a huge moral victory.

“It was every bit a win for us,” Spartans head coach Rob Edmondson said. “Unionville outchanced us a lot. To keep a clean sheet against a team with a number of rep players was good for us. The girls were happy to earn a tie.”

If the Spartans hope to win, Edmondson said success will stem from the midfield anchored by Dayle Wilkinson, their lone rep player, and Jaime Sparks.

As well, Edmondson feels goalkeeper Tracey Velletri is beginning to take control of her position. In the tie against Unionville, the Grade 10 netminder made a couple of big saves.

The Spartans host Richmond Green at the old SDSS field Monday at 3 p.m. and then play Thursday at St. Augustine in Markham at 3 p.m.

“These two games could tell if we can earn a playoff spot,” he said.
