Lee shines at provincials

When Christina Lee joined the Tristar Gymnastics Club two years ago, she qualified for the provincial championships and placed eighth on bars.

Participating in last year’s provincials, she won a silver on bars and was 11th in the all around.

At this year’s recent provincials conducted near Niagara-on-the-Lake, the 16-year-old Richmond Hill resident continued her ascent up the competitive ladder by winning the coveted all-around title in her age group division.

Competing in the Level 5 14+ grouping, Lee recorded a personal best score on vault of 11.7 to place third. She also placed fourth on beam, fifth on bars and seventh on floor.

A Grade 11 student at Holy Trinity School, Lee entered the competition feeling she could compete for the coveted title.

But to win it, she said, was beyond her personal expectations.

“At first it was a shock,” she recalled. “But I’m proud of my accomplishment.

This is definitely one of the highlights of my competitive career.”

Lee attributed her success to the countless hours she’s logged in perfecting her routines at the Markham-based club. Not to mention her ability to perform with a degree of consistency in all four apparatus events.

Introduced to the sport when she was seven years of age through the encouragement of her parents, Lee hasn’t delved too far in the future as to where she wants to take her competitive career.

But citing she relishes the challenges of learning and perfecting new skills and routines, any continued improvement will suit her just fine for the time being.

“In the future I hope to keep improving on what I do,” she said.
