Pulsars’ Hew scores silver to anchor medal haul in gym

Melanie Hew of Pulsars Gymnastics scored top marks on the vault and received second-place marks for her floor routine to claim a silver medal in the National women’s open category at the Eastern Canadian championships for gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline on the weekend in Longueuil, Que.

Hew’s performance helped Team Ontario to first place in the team standings and anchored a strong showing by area gymnasts competing at the meet.

At the Level 8 provincial, Amanda Powell parlayed first-place marks on the beam and a second-place showing on the uneven bars into a gold medal in her category.

The Shenderey Gymnastics Institute athlete competed in Level 8 for 14-and-over girls and was one of three local athletes to claim medals at the competition for  provincial stream gymnasts from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime provinces.

Pulsars Gymnastics’ Elizabeth Galati finished second  in the Level 9 category.

Meanwhile, Shenderey’s Dayna Hilliard finished third all-around in the girls 14-and-over category with a first-place finish on the beam highlighting her performance in Level 7.

In power tumbling, Newmarket resident Nikki Ellis of Pulsars won the Provincial C category. Kids Supergym’s Rachel Knetsch finished in a tie for third place.

In trampoline competition, Laura Engsig of Airborne Trampoline North won the girls 13-and-over division title.

Gilad Gratch was a member of the winning tandem in the synchro competition in Provincial C for 13-and-over, while Ben Heyl shared in a silver medal.

Among boys, Andrew Martin of Airborne North placed third among competitors in the individual Level C men’s competition.

Extra bounce in their step with top 3 finishes

Rosannagh MacLennan of King City and Aurora’s Samantha Sendel finished second and third respectively at an Olympic women’s trampoline selection competition held  the weekend in Terrebonne, Que.

Two-time Olympian Karen Cockburn won in the event, the second of three qualifiers before the Canadian team is announced for the Beijing Olympics.

Cockburn and MacLennan are in line to secure two of the four Canadian trampoline berths for August.

Saints make it 4 straight

The Newmarket Saints take their winning act on the road for the weekend after rolling to a fourth straight victory Tuesday night with an 11-10 win over the Huntsville Hawks in Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B action at the Ray Twinney Complex.

Brock Levick scored the winning goal with five seconds remaining in the third period and Shawn Beer tallied five goals to lead the Saints’ attack.

The Saints, third in the Mid-East Division of the Eastern Conference with a 4-1 record, visit the Cornwall Celtics and Akwesasne Lightning Saturday and Sunday.

Canadian cricket title on line in King

Call it cricket in a flash.

Instead of a series of matches over several days, a Canadian championship will be declared in one weekend as eight teams converge on King City’s Maple Leaf Cricket Club for the inaugural Twenty20 Cricket Championship starting Saturday.

The two-day event will include defending champion British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia in a series of 24 matches to determine the national champion.

Scheduled starting times both days are 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Twenty20 matches are fast-paced and high-scoring with a winner declared in about three hours.

Traditionally, a test match could last for up to five days and a 50-over game can last about eight hours.

With some rules modifications, the hot new style is an entertaining format that is rapidly gaining popularity in the cricket world, notably in the Indian Premier League.

The Maple Leaf Cricket Club is on Dufferin Street, north of King Road.

Saturday's matches are free for spectators although Sunday passes are $5.

Championship and consolation finals are Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
