Mustangs are finalists

The Alexander Mackenzie High School Mustangs junior boys’ rugby team advanced to last Saturday’s final of the Red Hot Tournament before losing 33-26 to the Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans.

Played at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple, Tyler McIlroy had two tries for the Mustangs and Leo Dubinsky had a try and three converts. Nick Petroff had one try.

To reach the final, the Mustangs defeated Napanee District High School 12-8 in their semifinal match earlier in the day.

McIlroy and Thomas Hunt each had a try while Dubinsky booted a convert.

Salvaggio powerful on vault

Alessa Salvaggio capped off her competitive season at the recent Elite Ontario competition in Hamilton by placing sixth in the all-around competition.

Entered in the Level 9, 12/13 division, the Richmond Hill resident, who competes with the Markham-based Tristar Gymnastics, started off on a strong note. She finished first on vault with a score of 14.150. In doing so, she earned the Most Powerful Vault award.

In other individual events, Salvaggio earned a fourth on floor after being the only athlete in her age category to perform a double somersault. That effort also enabled her to earn the Most Variety in Tumbling award.

Salvaggio was also fifth on beam and 14th in bars, after incurring a fall in her routine.
