The Stouffville Mennos bats’ sounded off in a big way Tuesday as they mercied the host Oshawa Juniors 12-1 in Oshawa City and District Fastball League action.
Nursing a 4-0 lead entering the sixth inning, the Mennos erupted for eight runs. Igniting the uprising were singles from Rich Burkholder, Scott Eyre, Byron Baranieski and a two-run hit from Kristian Burkholder.
The Mennos opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning with singles from Greg Dalgarno, Scott Evans, Rich Burkholder and Dale Boadway.
After scoring a run in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead, the Mennos scored in the fourth on a solo homer by Evans, who played first base to help the club fill out their nine-man roster.
Dalgarno gave up a run on six hits and struck out six to earn the win.
Winners of their last five games and sporting an 11-4 mark, the Mennos will host the Markham Majors tonight at Memorial Park at 8:30 p.m.
Last weekend, the Mennos advanced to the final of the Huntsville open tournament before falling to the Waterdown Hammer, a top-rated intermediate team, 5-4 in eight innings.
The Hammer won the game on a walk-off, two-run homer.
Jay Nesbitt took the loss in relief of Baranieski. Chris Burkholder went three-for three.
The Mennos opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over a local team, defeated another Northern team, the Bantus, 5-1, and routed the Waterdown Target 8-0.
Advancing to the semifinals, the Mennos received a solid pitching effort from Dalgarno in a 4-1 win over the Ingersoll Crunch Sunday.
Baranieski, Jeff Boadway and Chris Burkholder all homered in the tournament.
NOTEBOOK: Five members of the Mennos were to take part in the league’s all-star game in Oshawa yesterday. They were: Dalgarno, Eyre, Rich Burkholder and Dale Boadway. Art Burkholder was chosen to be one of the coaches for the north squad that will face an all-star squad representing the league’s south division.
