The Stouffville Mennos had a rough outing when they ventured to Dieppe Park in East York for their Oshawa City and District Fastball League game Thursday against the Toronto Celtics.
The Mennos lost 9-2.
The Celtics jumped on Mennos’ starting pitcher Byron Baranieski and some casual defensive outfield play in the second inning by scoring four runs, buoyed by a three-run homer by Matt Dasilva.
The Mennos, who were missing the services of starting outfielders Curtis Reesor and Kris Burkholder, scored their first run in the third inning when Rich Burkholder singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Chris Burkholder.
The Celtics added a run in the fourth inning to pad their margin to 5-1 before the Mennos scored what would be their final run in the fifth when Rich Burkholder doubled and scored on a single by Chris Burkholder.
The Celtics countered with three more runs in their half of the fifth inning due in part to two Mennos’ errors along with a pair of walks, to take an 8-2 lead and one more in the sixth to round out the scoring.
Grant Patterson, a senior pitcher who also throws for Midland, Mich., started on the rubber for the Celtics and surrendered just one run on five hits to earn the win.
Baranieski took the loss after giving up five runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Now 11-6 on the season, the Mennos are scheduled to resume league play July 31 against the Oshawa BB Intermediates at Memorial Park at 8:30 p.m.
