The Unionville-Milliken Soccer Club under-seven boys all-star team ruled the pitch at the recent 17th annual Oshawa NASC Soccer Tournament by winning their division title, capped off with a 3-2 win over Whitby Iroquois Blue in the title tilt at Lakeview Park.

Coached by Chris McLeish and Stephen Spencer, the Unionville-Milliken team went undefeated in reaching the final. Other team members that contributed to the club’s tournament title run included: Mark Insanally, Jaylen Spencer, Max McLeish, Luke Dasios, Brandon SoonShiong, Liam Ross, Luca Delapa, Nicholas Early, Phillip Morrone and Kealeb Rainford.

Hornets finalists in Quebec

The Markham Hornets Team Black under-12 boys advanced to the final of the recent Montreal Lakeshore Soccerfest Tournament before bowing out to the host Lakeshore Strikers 2-1.

The Hornets reached the final after defeating the Cornwall Coyotes 2-0 before being edged 2-1 by the host Strikers. But the Hornets rebounded to blank the Pointe-Claire Devils 3-0.

The victory enabled the Hornets, who played the tournament with only nine healthy players one day and 10 the next, to secure first place in their three-team pool and advance to the final.

Coached by Zoan Radonjic and managed by Karl Abbott, team members playing in Montreal were: Austin Altobelli, Matthew Kelly, Luciano Abbott, Keaton Cribbey, Christopher Enright, Veyasan Jeyaratnam, Mario Berardi, Brandon Popalis, Nicholas Abbott and Aleksandar Radonjic.

Sign up for speed skating

If you want to try speed skating, but haven’t had the opportunity, the Markham Speed Skating Club will provide that opportunity Sept. 7 when it conducts its annual open house at Mount Joy Arena from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Roger Buxton, club president, noted this is a free opportunity for people, mostly children, to try speed skating to find out if they like it enough to want to join the club and continue to learn and compete.

“With the next Olympic Winter Games to be held in Vancouver just 18 months away, this is a good time to get involved in the sport which has won half of Canada’s medals for the past three Games. See how champions start!”
