Rugby players make national final

Four Stouffville residents were members of the provincial squad that advanced to the finals of last weekend’s under-18 national rugby championships in Ottawa before falling 45-0 to British Columbia.

Matt Raguseo, Chris Lombardo, James Beare and Joe Beare were on the Ontario team.

All four were members of the Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans senior team that won the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AA title the last two years.

Raguseo manned the centre position with Team Ontario while Lombardo was a prop and James Beare hooker. Joe Beare, a wing, would have started but was on the sidelines after breaking a leg two weeks ago.

Mennos show no mercy

The Stouffville Mennos made quick work of the Oshawa Intermediates in a rescheduled Oshawa City and District Fastball League road contest Monday with a 9-1 mercy-shortened win.

The Mennos erupted for four runs in the first inning with run-scoring singles by Scott Eyre and Jeff Boadway and a two-run single by Kris Burkholder.

The Mennos continued their onslaught in the second inning.

Eyre belted a two-run homer and run-scoring singles were hit by Boadway, Brett Boyd and Shawn Boadway to pad their advantage to 9-0.

Jay Nesbitt pitched the first three innings and gave up a run while striking out three batters to earn the win.

Byron Baranieski pitched the final two innings and gave up a hit while striking out two batters.

Now 14-8 on the season, the Mennos are scheduled to host the Markham Majors today at Memorial Park at 8:30 p.m.

Worden links up for third  

Stouffville resident Gavin Worden and his partner, Tyson Louth of Orillia, finished in a three-way tie for third place in the Golf Association of Ontario’s Junior and Juvenile Boys Better Ball Championship at Timber Ridge Golf Club near Brighton Monday.

A member of York Downs Golf Club, Worden and Louth, a member of Lake St. George Golf Club in Orillia, recorded a four-under par 67 during the 18-hole event.

They finished three strokes behind the winning tandem of Mathew Wheeler and Brandon Ng. The Toronto residents play out of Beacon Hall Golf Club in Aurora.

Mustang boys win region

The Stouffville Mustangs under-18 boys captured the York Region Soccer Association Cup title recently with a 3-1 win over York Simcoe United in the championship final in Richmond Hill.

Blake Chapman booted home two goals while Jonathan Stansfield added the other marker.

The Mustangs blanked Thornhill 2-0 in their semifinal game.

Coached by Andrew Stansfield and Dennis Zuccolin, other members of the Mustangs were:  goalkeeper Mitchell Arnold, Scott Beloff, Brandon Cautious, Joe Devito, Colin Hilts, Romaine Loftman, Mike Menechella, Josh Montesano, Matt Smith, Ash Soughyan, Connor Stevens, Mark Van Ooste, Dan Zuccolin, Wesley Copp, Eriz Szabo and Pat Salvagna.

Girls earn soccer split

The Stouffville Mustang under-12 girls gained a split in two York Region Soccer Association contests, defeating Peterborough 4-1 Tuesday and dropping a 5-1 decision against North Toronto last Thursday.

Rochelle Foo scored twice for the Mustangs in their win over Peterborough. Cristina Oprescu and Victoria Wicks added singles.

Oprescu had the lone goal against North Toronto.

The Mustangs resume league play tonight in Whitby.
