Music, performers coming to opening

A new Thornhill park is opening in style, with a full-blown community festival Aug. 17.
Construction of the park, at 19 Beverley Glen Road, is just being completed right now, said Vaughan councillor Alan Shefman.
There are many unique things about the as-of-yet unnamed park, he said.
“We’ve designed this as an urban park ... This park is being built in a very high-density area,” Mr. Shefman said. “There are no single family homes on that block.”
It’s also smaller than the average Vaughan park, he added.
Another unique thing about the new park is that a local developer contributed funds for its construction, Mr. Shefman said. Liberty Development Corp.’s contribution helped the city add features it couldn’t otherwise afford, he added.
Some of the park’s features include two grand metal entrance gateways, a shade pergola, which Mr. Shefman said is the park’s “central focus,” a woodlot with pathways through it, walkways and plenty of benches.
Also unique is the celebration of the park’s opening, Mr. Shefman said.
“Rather than do the regular boring ribbon cutting, we’re going to have a community festival,” he said. “The idea will be to bring the neighbourhood together.”
The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. and includes free food and entertainment, including music, buskers, clowns and a magic show. The official opening is at 2:30 p.m.
The 17th is also the day the park will officially be named. Mr. Shefman said. Local residents submitted ideas for names and the winning moniker will be announced at the event.
