A Vaughan man has been charged in connection with a small business banking scam in Durham Region. On Monday, a woman walked into the Bank of Montreal branch at 600 King St. East in Oshawa and tried to open a small business account, Durham Regional Police said.
Bank employees, suspicious of her ID, called police. When officers and fraud investigators arrived and spoke with the woman and two men with her, they determined the ID was fake and arrested three people, police said.
Police seized a counterfeit Ontario driver’s licence, fake social insurance card and a credit card in a false name during the probe.
Two men deliberately misled the investigation by misidentifying a woman, police said.
A 39-year-old Woodbridge man, a 25-year-old woman and her 45-year-old father, both of Toronto, are charged with attempting fraud over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and obstructing police.
The Toronto woman is also charged with four counts of uttering forged documents, forgery, two counts of possession of a counterfeit mark, possession of a credit card obtained by crime, fraud over $5,000 and obtaining credit by fraud.
