Students at a Woodbridge school took on a formidable and complex story in their production of The Seagull, but they have risen to the challenge and gone beyond expectations, their teacher says.

“I am seeing some of the finest acting moments that I have seen in my year of teaching at the this school,” Richard Peters said, the Toronto District Christian High School drama class instructor.

Anton Chekov’s dramatic comedy is about the joys, sorrows and rampant love affairs of nineteenth century Russia.

The school’s upper-level drama class is running the entire show and The Seagull was selected for its comedic values, stimulating and colourful characters, and interesting outlook on life during a difficult time in Russia’s history.

The student director drew on the excitement of the performers, he says.

“As a first time director, directing an energetic and enthusiastic group of my peers has been both challenging and rewarding,” Nathan Kalk said. “The class’s interpretation of Chekov’s play is both new and engaging.”

Performances are at the school, 377 Woodbridge Ave. at 7 p.m. May 22 to 24, as well as a 1 p.m. matinée May 24. Tickets are $8 for students and $10 for adults, and can be bought at the door or reserved in advance by e-maiing aphilp@tdchristian.ca
