A Vaughan auto parts maker has pleaded guilty and was fined $50,000 for violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The incident relates to an employee who was injured while working at Kitchener Frame Limited in 2007.

In January 2007, a jam happened on the company’s 146-metre long overhead conveyor while the chains were being replaced.

A worker freed the jam, but his leg was pinned and broken between two steel rails as the conveyor moved.

A Labour Ministry investigation found that although the conveyor stopped, it was not blocked to prevent movement which contributed to the incident.

The court also imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge on the $50,000 as required by the provincial offences act.

The surcharge fund provides services for victims of crime.
