Whitchurch-Stouffville is without a curling facility.But if a concerned group of curling enthusiasts has its way, that could soon change.A committee has been formed by community members to bring a facility to town.The committee has members specialized in developing membership drives, building and facilities design, business planning, site planning, marketing and fund raising. During the Strawberry Festival, the committee had a booth on Park Drive with a large sign that said “Help Bring Curling to Town”. Demand to have a club built was overwhelmingly positive, club spokesperson Stewart Bond said.Among those who showed support and spoke to residents was Stouffville’s Mike Harris, a 1998 Winter Olympic curling silver medallist and CBC curling commentator.“We had (more than) 200 people sign their names in support of building a curling facility in our town,” Mr. Bond said. A junior curling coach approached offered to help develop a youth program. “We also had a local resident inform us he had an original Stouffville Curling Club rock at his house,” he said.Whitchurch-Stouffville has had several curling clubs, but none since the 1970s. Several local curlers play out of Uxbridge and Unionville.
