A Stouffville art exhibit is bringing together changes in York Region, for better or worse.

“The show shows a couple of different perspectives about what’s going on in York Region. It shows both the negatives and the positives,” said Latcham Gallery curator Maura Broadhurst.

The gallery is hosting The Changing Face of York Region exhibition, which begins Saturday. The opening-day  reception is on from 1 to 3 p.m.

The exhibition, which features artworks in a variety of different media, runs until Oct. 19.

“The region is going through quite a bit of changes,” said Ms Broadhurst. “We wanted work that would somehow engage the viewer and (help them) reflect on something that might be familiar in their own lives.”

Artists were invited to make submissions to be considered for the show.

The exhibition features five artists from across the region including two locals, Diana Bullock and Sandra Cole Burke.

Ms Burke will be showcasing watercolour paintings and woodblock prints, carved from an ash tree.

“I was working with this tree and thought this would be good because they’ve been cutting down a lot of trees, but they’re also planting a lot of trees (in York Region),” she said.

Ms Burke said her inspirations all come from “everything in nature”.

Nature isn’t the only topic that will be on display.

“(The artworks) show how the natural environment is changing, as well as the emergence of different cultures,” said Ms Broadhurst, adding the artists cover a wide variety of topics viewers can relate to.

The exhibit will also have an interactive corner said Ms Broadhurst, where viewers can get their own creative juices flowing.

“I just hope people will reflect (on the works) and give them new ideas to think about,” she said.

The exhibit is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Latcham Gallery, 6240 Main St. in downtown Stouffville.
