Are you ready to get greener, Whitchurch-Stouffville?
The new green bin program, which adds a bin for household organic waste to your garbage and recycling collection, begins in Whitchurch-Stouffville the week of Sept. 10. You’ll receive your bin next month.
This is all comes in the shadow of last weekend’s Live Earth concerts. Aside from hearing some of the biggest musical acts on the planet, viewers were given suggestions on being more environmentally sensitive.
Tips? Use more efficient light bulbs, unplug cellphone chargers when not in use and keep the tire pressure up in your vehicle.
Whitchurch-Stouffville residents rode at least part of the wave before it was fashionable. The recycling depot in Memorial Park was operated by volunteers long before blue boxes were introduced.
Think of the green bin as another step on the road to better care for our world.
Separating household organic waste from the rest of your garbage could keep 65 per cent of the waste generated in York Region out of landfill sites.
Whitchurch-Stouffville is one of the northern six municipalities in York launching the new three-stream waste management program this fall. The others are Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, and Newmarket. The joint effort will save $11 million over the next decade, the municipalities say.
But, it means changing habits.
While your green bin and recycling will be picked up weekly, garbage collection changes to every two weeks from weekly. Large articles will be picked up every two weeks, instead of once a month.
Wonder how you’ll cope?
