The son of Woodbridge couple Domenico and Annunziata Ianiero, murdered in Mexico in 2006, has been charged by York Regional Police, the York Region Media Group has learned.
Anthony Ianiero, 38, of Vaughan was arrested June 27 by York police and charged with criminal harassment, forcible confinement, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and uttering threats.
The charges were laid in connection with an ongoing dispute involving a man and a woman, police spokesperson Const. Gary Phillips said.
Police declined to release further information about the case, citing privacy laws and protecting the identity of the victim.
Following his arrest, Mr. Ianiero was released on $10,000 bail, Const. Phillips said.
He is scheduled for another court appearance July 21.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
Mr. Ianiero hired prominent Toronto lawyer Edward Greenspan to conduct an investigation in the aftermath of his parents’ deaths in Mexico.
Domenico, 59, and Mrs. Ianiero 55, were starting a two-week vacation and attending the marriage of one of their two daughters in Feb. 2006 when they were murdered in their resort room.
The couple was staying at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort, a sprawling, all-inclusive resort about an hour’s drive south of Cancun when they were slain.
In the months that followed, the names of several suspects emerged including a hotel security guard who went missing around the time of the killings. Allegations were also made by Mexican authorities that two women from Northern Ontario may have been involved.
Controversy dogged the case amid allegations the investigation was bungled by Mexican authorities.
No arrests in the case have ever been made public.
Attempts to contact Mr. Ianiero and Mr. Greenspan were unsuccessful.
