Unionville residents may cast their votes in the ward byelection at advanced polls this weekend.
The advanced polls will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Varley Art Gallery.
The town is encouraging voters to walk or cycle to the gallery to reduce parking congestion and help the environment.
The formal voting day in Nov. 23. Polls then will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Residents on the voters’ list were mailed voter notification cards last week. It has information about where you should vote on Nov. 23.
Eligible voters who didn’t receive a card can add themselves to the voters’ list online at markham.ca, call 905-477-7000 ext. 8683 (VOTE) or visit the clerk’s department at the Civic Centre.
You are eligible to vote if you are a Canadian citizen, at least 18 and reside in, or are the owner or tenant of land in Ward 3. The ward’s boundaries are 16th Avenue to the north, Hwy. 407 to the south, Warden Avenue to the west and McCowan Road to the east.
Voters will be asked to show their voter notification card and valid photo ID at the polling station. If someone doesn’t have their voter notification card, they must show photo identification, proof of Canadian citizenship, proof of age and proof of Markham residency or non-resident eligibility.
During advanced polling, an AutoMark ballot marking unit will be available to help voters with vision and physical mobility disabilities.
It helps people with disabilities mark their ballots independently with the use of special appliances and a touch screen ballot. This system includes paddle, sip/puff and Braille selectors, touch screen ballot size enhancement and audio ballot recording.
The town is assessing the unit for the 2010 municipal election.
