Oakville eliminates Markham for final spot in C. Canada Jr. A championships

The field is suddenly set for this month’s Dudley Hewitt Cup in Newmarket.

The Oakville Blades joined the Newmarket Hurricanes, Sudbury Junior Wolves and Dryden Ice Dogs tonight in the slate for the central Canada Jr. A hockey championships.

The tournament will be played April 22 to 26 at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex in Newmarket.

Oakville punched its ticket with a 6-3 win at home Sunday over the Markham Waxers. Oakville won the Provincial Jr. A Hockey League best-of-seven championship series 4-1.

The other series ended Saturday.

Sudbury swept the Abitibi Eskimos in four games in the Northern Ontario Jr. A Hockey League final. Abitibi, near Timmins, hosted last year’s Dudley Hewitt.

Dryden, located midway between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, knocked off the Fort William North Stars in five games in the Superior International Jr. A Hockey League championship series. The Thunder Bay-based Stars hosted and won the Dudley Hewitt in 2006.

Newmarket, which failed to win a playoff series, gets in as hosts.

Round-robin games will be played April 22 to 24 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. with Newmarket in the late game each day.

The semifinal goes April 25 at 7:30 p.m. and the final April 26 at 8 p.m.

All games will broadcast on Rogers TV (channels 10 and 63) in York Region and Stouffville-based whistleradio.com (102.7 FM).

The winner of the Dudley Hewitt will play in the Royal Bank Cup national championships May 3 to 11 in Cornwall.

The Aurora Tigers won the Dudley Hewitt and Royal Bank cups last year. Oakville eliminated Aurora in the  Provincial league semifinals this season.
