A second-period vacation from intensity and discipline got the Oakville Blades into trouble today at the Dudley Hewitt Cup.

The return of those qualities in the final frame — and the continued dominance of winger Nick McParland — bailed them out.

McParland recorded his second hat trick in as many games and the Blades scored three unanswered goals in the third period to down the Sudbury Junior Wolves 5-3 at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, improving to 2-0 at the Central Canadian junior hockey championship tournament. Oakville will look for a sweep of its round-robin schedule — and a bye to Saturday's final — when it faces the host Newmarket Hurricanes Thursday night.

At worst, even with a loss Thursday, the Blades have already guaranteed themselves a spot in the semifinal.

Oakville captain Chris Corbeil provided Wednesday's game-winner with 11:39 to go in regulation time, tapping in a feed from Geoff Guimond to finish off a beautiful three-way passing play that also included Dustin Alcock. McParland, who tied the game 29 seconds into the third, added an empty-netter with 31 seconds left.

Penalty trouble was the main reason the Blades found themselves down 3-2 after 40 minutes. Jeff Grenier (hooking) and Kyle Badham (head check) were both whistled on the same play midway through the second frame and Wolves sniper Scott Restoule scored on the ensuing 5-on-3. With Sudbury still on a one-man advantage, Luke Moodie was called for slashing. The Wolves again capitalized, with J.F. Houle banging a rebound past Oakville netminder Scott Greenham to give Sudbury a 3-2 lead.

McParland and Corbeil scored in the first for Oakville, sandwiched around a shorthanded marker by Wolves captain Jordan Cheechoo, to give the Blades an early 2-1 lead.

Oakville was again without forward Kellan Lain, a key cog in their Provincial Junior A Hockey League championship run, reportedly due to illness.
