Raw deal for people on fixed incomes

Richmond Hill Letter to the Editor - May 10, 2008

Without any notification to the community, the town raised the swimming pool facility fee by 25 per cent.

How can this be justified when the cost of inflation was 1.8 per cent and property taxes have gone up?

The increase may not seem like a lot to most people, but to pensioners on a fixed income it is a great deal.

It means an increase of $11 for a three-month pass, up to $54.

Swimming is an excellent way to keep fit for older people and should be encouraged by the town, not discouraged.

Please be fair and lower the 25 per cent increase to a more reasonable level for the senior citizens of Richmond Hill.

Music to our ears

Richmond Hill Letter to the Editor - May 10, 2008

The Alexander Mackenzie High School music department crammed in 500 or so avid music fans and parents last month to the roar of cheers everywhere. The music students did not disappoint.

As a parent, I’ve been following this fine collection of musicians for several years now and it seems the bar for music excellence, growth, learning and teamwork at Alec Mac just keeps getting higher.

And who is responsible for setting that bar higher and higher and doing what is necessary to ensure the students meet it? Our music teachers.

All too often, schools and their staff only hear words of complaint. So when there is cause to celebrate, congratulate and escalate words of praise, let’s blow the horn loudly.

Protect your credit card or else

Stouffville Letter to the Editor - May 10, 2008

I just received my Amex bill for last month and, much to my surprise, I had more than $300 worth of gas showing that I did not buy.

There were two fill-ups in Ottawa within a couple of days for close to $200 and, a few days later, at a gas station in the area, two more fill-ups on the same day.  That is a pretty big tank to hold that much gas or someone is really on the move.

When relating this to someone, they told me they had the same thing on their MasterCard with fill ups in Ottawa. I don’t understand how this can be done without the card. The only place I don’t see my card being used is at the gas station. The advice given to me was to go in to where they swipe your card and watch them do it.

Just thought I would pass this information on. They walk among us.
