Stephen Ames chips onto the third green on the second day round at the Canadian Open at Angus Glen Golf Club.

Don Alexander played in the Canadian Open in 1962 as an amateur.

In recent times, the Toronto resident has been a spectator but now, the 69-year-old Alexander can say he has been a caddy in the event as well.

Alexander was pressed into service rather unexpectedly during Thursday’s opening round at Angus Glen Golf Club in Unionville when American touring pro Jay Williamson had heated discussions with his caddy, Mike Mollet.

The incident reached a boiling point after Williamson's approach shot on the 14th hole sailed over the green.

Williamson told Mollet his services were no longer required on the 15th tee. prompting Mollet to fire a handful of Williamson’s golf balls into the pond and storm off.

Alexander, who just happened to be following Williamson and playing partners Scott Gump and John Mallinger, responded to Williamson's request for a replacement.
During the round, Williamson fired a one-over- par 72.

Refusing to discuss the argument, Williamson was happy with Alexander’s work.

“I think he had fun,” Williamson told reporters after the round. “He was a nice guy and he had played some golf before.”

For his efforts, Alexander received a dozen new golf balls.

Alexander won’t be on the bag today, however, as Williamson hired another caddy.
