A new Canadian-inspired anthology book is being published to help World Vision and women across Canada. And it has a York Region connection.
Hot Apple Cider assembles the writings of 30 Canadian authors. Markham writer Nancy Jane Lindquist penned two of the stories and is one of the book’s editors.
“It’s a collection of mystery stories, poetry, some fiction and some personal experiences, a variety of profiles and some thoughtful teaching stories,” Ms Lindquist, 60, said.
In an unusual arrangement, each author receives royalties from the publisher for copies sold through normal retail channels, but they donated the money needed to print another 30,000 copies for World Vision, which is giving them out to people attending 80 Faithlife Financial Girls Night Out conferences across Canada.
“We went to a Girls Night Out event a year ago and the speakers were all Canadian, but in the package given to participants had an all-American book,” Ms Lindquist said, explaining why she undertook such a large project.
Even though taking part in the book is coming with a cost for the authors, she believes Hot Apple Cider is a great advertisement for them.
“Putting an ad in a magazine costs a lot of money; I’m hoping when people read my short stories in the book, they will read my other books.”
One of Ms Lindquist stories is The Diamond Ring, about her thoughts on being adopted.
“Being adopted affected my life in a lot of ways. I was very creative and gifted intellectually and no one knew that,” she said.
“When you’re adopted, there is no way a family member can say, ‘Oh she is just like Uncle Sam’. I have four boys and I can say, ‘You are just like your dad’.”
Hot Apple Cider is similar to the Chicken Soup books because of the short, personal stories, but different because of the Christian and Canadian influence.
“The authors reveal their Christianity in the sense of faith perspective, not necessarily preaching, but simply revealing an awareness of God,” Ms Lindquist said.
