Goalie to national team camp

Liz Knox was one of four goaltenders invited to Team Canada’s under-22 women’s hockey team selection camp.

The Stouffville resident and Stouffville District Secondary School graduate was one of 40 players invited to the camp scheduled to take place Aug. 10 to 17 at York University.

The team will select a 22-player roster for their upcoming three-game series against the United States under-22 squad in Pierrefonds, Que., Aug. 20 to 23.

Knox, who just completed her sophomore year at Wilfrid Laurier University, was a second-team Ontario University Athletics all-star and was chosen to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championship tournament all-star team after backstopping her club to the silver medal.

Kings, queens of Dorman Drive

The team of Dave and Kayla Deasley, Steve Avoledo and Paul Fawcett ruled the Spring Creek Golf and Country Club fairways in Claremont last Saturday by winning the eighth annual Dorman Mixed Golf Classic.

With Dave Deasley sinking two long birdie putts, their foursome won the title by one stroke over last year’s winning team led by Sal Lombardo.

A total of 48 neighbours and friends who reside primarily on Dorman Drive in east Stouffville took part in the one-day event that began in 2001.

Vincec races to title in Wisconsin

Mike Vincec karted off with the East Division title at the Snap-on Stars of Karting Series last weekend at the USA International Raceway in Shawano, Wisc., after finishing second in two feature races.

Driving for Cameron Motorsports team in his CRG/Maxter ICC, the 17-year-old Stouffville resident entered the weekend with a 71-point lead in the series and finished third in one heat race and second in two others.

“I feel pretty good now,” Vincec said of his performance. “We came pretty close last year (to winning the division title) which made us want to come back and get the deal done.

“Now we’ll focus on trying to wrap up the West Division title in Seattle on Aug. 22-24 and bring it all to the series finals in October.”

Vincec’s next event is in the Ontario Regional Karting Championships event at Mosport International Karting July 25-27 where he contends in the Rotax Max category. He will be at the ASN Canada National Championships, Aug. 8-10 at Karting Grand Mere, Grand Mere, Quebec.

Brown second in CJGA event for best finish of season

Ryan Brown carded a two-round, 12-over par 156 to finish in a two-way tie for second in Wednesday’s Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Junior Open at Spring Lakes Golf Club in Newmarket.

Competing in the boys 14-16 grouping, the 16-year-old Gormley-area resident carded rounds of 77 and 79 to finish one stroke behind winner Matthew LaRiviere of Richmond Hill.

For Brown, the second-place effort was his best of the season on the CJGA circuit.

Gajan bounced from match play

Gajan Sivabalasingham was eliminated from the Golf Association of Ontario’s Investors Group Junior Boys Match Play championship after losing his second round match at Batteaux Creek Golf Club near Collingwood Wednesday.

Facing Hamilton’s David Crawford, 18, the 14-year-old Ballantrae resident lost 3 and 1.

Gajan won his first round match Tuesday over Adam Kostrich, 17, of Barrie on the 19th hole.
