Golfer Hamilton defends title at OVIG tournament

Newmarket resident Jim Hamilton defended his title in the senior men’s totally blind category at the Ontario Visiually Impaired Golf provincial championships held at Chippewa Creek Golf & Country Club near Mount Hope.

Hamilton, 62, carded an 86 net to win the title for the second straight year.

Hamilton is also in the field for the 2008 Canadian Open Blind Golf Championship to be held Sept. 8 to 10 at Cambridge Golf Club.

Canada faces top competition in cricket tournament in King City

Canada will dream of a second straight win as it faces the West Indies Friday morning as the Scotiabank Cup Series tri-nation cricket series resumes at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City.

Canada topped Bermuda by 26 runs in the series opening match held Monday.

The West Indies thumped Bermuda Wednesday with a six-wicket win to set up a battle of the undefeated teams Friday.

But Canada will be in tough against the West Indies, the No. 8 ranked team in the one day series in the world.

The victory by Canada, combined with Bermuda’s 0-2 record, makes Friday’s game academic as both they and the West Indies have qualified for Sunday’s final.

Admission is free for round-robin matches although tickets are $10 for the championship match Sunday.
