The Vaughan Vikings will be playing for a medal at the 2008 Baseball Canada peewee boys championships in Vaughan Sunday.
The Vikings placed themselves in that situation by winning their playoff game Saturday evening against Saskatchewan 8-2 at Concord Regional Park.
Anchoring the Vikings’ win was pitcher Ryan Grant, who tossed 4 1/3 innings and fanned 12 batters to pick up the win.
After scoring a run in the second inning and two in the third, the Vikings blew the game wide open in the sixth inning when they erupted or five runs generated in part by a two-run single by Geoffrey Seto.
“Ryan was lights out. He was outstanding,” Vikings head coach Dirk Drieberg said.
The win by the Vikings atoned for a 22-9 loss at the hands of B.C. Saturday morning. The loss placed the Vikings in third place in Pool B with a 3-2 record.
With the victory, the Vikings will face Quebec, who finished first in Pool B with a 5-0 record, in one semifinal today at 11:30 a.m.
The winner will advance to the gold medal game and face the victor of the other semifinal pitting Ontario (Windsor) against British Columbia that also starts at 11:30 a.m.
The losers of both games will play in the bronze-medal match at 3 p.m. while the winners play at 6 p.m.
All games are being played at Concord Regional Park, Dufferin Street and Hwy. 407.
