A 60-year-old Toronto woman died after she was run over by her own vehicle in Vaughan Saturday morning.

At about 11:20 a.m., the woman parked her 2000 Mercedes-Benz in the lot of 2180 Steeles Ave. West, just east of Keele Street, where she worked in Concord.

The left front tire of the empty vehicle travelled up the woman’s body and pinned her underneath, causing her to die, according to York Regional Police traffic bureau acting Staff Sgt. Brad Bulmer.

“We’re not sure how the vehicle ended up in motion,” he said.

From time to time, York police are called similar incidents, acting Staff Sgt. Bulmer added. One man was working on a vehicle in an inclined driveway and the vehicle rolled back on him, he said.

While police did not specifically link a brake problem to the fatality on Saturday, drum-type parking brakes — especially on standard transmission automobiles — may not be as efficient in reverse, however four-wheel disc brakes should be equally efficient in any direction, acting Staff Sgt. Bulmer said, adding motorists should always ensure the parking brake is properly adjusted.
