Skate Lakeside Canada held a yard sale fundraiser in Sutton. Fundraising chairperson Terry Lynn Phillips (from left), vice president Mary Wegg with Hannah Phillips, coach Jessica Eustace, skater Sydney Brausewetter, executive member Heather Holmes.

Skate Canada Lakeside is the skating club which operates out of the Sutton Arena, and one which has been offering learn to skate programs and skill level programs to children, teens and adults in the Sutton and surrounding area since 1960 — nearly 50 years.

“This year, the club is facing some challenges and they have several fundraising initiatives planned for their ‘Keep the kids on the Ice Campaign 2008/09’,” said fundraising chairperson Terry Lynn Phillips.

The first such event was a lawn sale, she added.

Members will also be around town selling scratch tickets, Skate Canada draw tickets and asking for support for a skate-a-thon on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Contributing service clubs and businesses will also be featured on the wall of Star Supporters in the Sutton Arena.

Sutton Sobeys refunds the club a portion of grocery tapes submitted, so feel free to drop any off at the Skate Canada Lakeside office in the Sutton Arena.

Eustace Pharmacy is also a Star Supporter with their team sponsorship card for members, she said.

Skate Canada Lakeside offers Canskate programs for any age children learning to skate and Starskate programs for more accomplished skaters.

“It is truly amazing to see how fast a beginner skater gets the hang of it, without having to hang on to a chair or a parent,” Ms Phillips said. “The Canskate program is a solid way to learn to skate for both figureskaters and hockey player.”

The skating programs run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights in the Sutton Arena.

The programs are fun and qualify for the fitness tax credit.

Funding may also be available through Georgina Cares and Canadian Tire’s Jump Start program.

Fall sessions start Sept. 9.
