The province announced a $1.7 billion surplus, some of which will be spent on local roads, Monday.

The big surplus is for the long list of infrastructure needs such as the roads, water supply, sewer systems, pavement conditions and sidewalks.

York Region was handed about $53 million to update and maintain transit systems and affordable housing.
Council to pick project

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville will receive $880,000.

It will be poured into roads at the discretion of town council, said Mayor Wayne Emmerson, who appreciated the money and its timing.

“It’s really good and ahead of schedule,” he said. “Last year, we got this after our budget and our roads budget (were set).

“We do have some issues with roads and this is welcome.”

Don’t expect the cash to cure all problems.

The recent upgrading of sections of Manitoba Street and McCowan Road cost about $1 million each.
