The Stouffville Mennos advanced to the Oshawa City and District Fastball League semifinals after sweeping their best-of-three quarter-final series over the Oshawa Intermediates with a 2-1 win at Memorial Park Thursday.
The game, which was a contrast from Tuesday's opener, was a pitcher's battle with the Mennos' Greg Dalgarno striking out nine batters and surrendering just four hits to earn the win.
The Mennos opened the scoring in the third inning when second baseman Rich Burkholder doubled and scored on a single by first baseman Chris Burkholder.
After the Intermediates tied the game in the sixth, the Mennos scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning. With two out, Rick Burkholder doubled and scored on a ground ball hit by catcher Dale Boadway that went between the Oshawa first baseman's legs.
Mennos' shortstop Jeff Boadway sustained a hamstring or groin injury while running out a triple in the fourth inning and had to leave the game. His status is uncertain for the Mennos' next game.
As of presstime the start of the semifinals is yet to be determined due to the status of other quarter-final games taking place.
