York Region is proud to be home to Canada's largest and most prestigious international polo tournament.

Polo for Heart is an annual three day charitable event held on the second last weekend in June with proceeds benefitting the Southlake Regional Health Centre and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Spectators are treated to matches featuring some of the world's elite competitors. Players converge from both local polo clubs and as far away as Argentina, France and Mexico. Two matches each day are complemented by other activities including the traditional half time divot stomp, live music, children's play area, artist/vendor tent, silent auction and public picnic areas with delicious fare and beverages.

Polo for Heart began in 1979, when Colonel Michael Sifton decided to bring two of his great loves - polo and people - together to help with his commitment to charitable causes. His father had died of a stroke so heart related research was especially important to him.

Colonel Sifton and his colleagues at the Toronto Polo Club, along with the Heart Action Committee, launched the inaugural Polo for Heart event which attracted 600 people and raised $25,000. Since then, Polo for Heart has raised more than $3 million for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and now attracts more than 10,000 people each year.

Colonel Sifton passed away in 1995. His wife Heather, sons Derek, Cliff and Michael, and many dedicated volunteers and partner groups, have strived to keep his vision alive.

So whether you are an polo enthusiast or just curious about this pastime in which rapport between rider and horse is imperative, Polo for Heart is a wonderful way to spend a day. Come on out to Gormley Polo Park in Richmond Hill and enjoy some top-notch international polo and help a worthy cause at the same time.
